Sports are derived from an old combination of words that literally meant, to carry away from work Millions of people simply enjoy relieving the stress of the work by seeking fun and relaxation on sporting endeavors. Sports practice is beneficial and healthy, although some practices can increase the risk of injuries including trauma to dental and oral tissues. Dental injuries are the most common type of orofacial injury sustained during participation in sports. With the increased popularity of contact sports and encouragement to participate at an early age, the role of the dental professionals in relation to prevention of dental and other orofacial sporting injuries has become more important in view of this. Fortunately, modern dentistry has developed numerous techniques and appliances to help protect the sports participants from a variety of oro facial injuries. In fact, preventive sports dentistry represents the most important contribution the dental profession can make to assure a sports participants welfare.
